What Your Donation Does: How Local Start Dental Turns Every Dollar Into Care

When you donate to Local Start Dental, the money does not sit in an operating fund waiting to be allocated. It becomes care. It becomes a procedure performed, a denture fitted, an implant placed, a patient who walked in with pain or embarrassment and walked out with something they had stopped believing was possible. This article explains exactly how that happens.
The Model: Why Your Donation Goes Further Here
Local Start Dental operates differently from most nonprofit health organizations. Our mission runs on two tracks at once: providing complex restorative dental care to patients who cannot afford it, and training practicing dentists from across the country through our Southeast Institute for Dental Education (SIDE).
These two missions are not separate. They are the same engine.
SIDE participants pay tuition to train alongside our clinical team. That tuition helps fund our patient-facing operations. The patients who participate in SIDE training courses receive complex care, including implant placement, extractions, and full-arch restoration, as part of their treatment. Two missions, one model. Every SIDE course advances both.
This means your donation is leveraged. When you give to Local Start Dental, your gift joins a funding model that multiplies its impact through SIDE revenue, sliding scale patient contributions, and clinical efficiency built over four years and more than 3,500 patients. You are not funding overhead. You are funding the gap between what care costs and what a patient can pay.
What Donations Make Possible
Dental care is expensive. The procedures Local Start Dental performs, including comprehensive exams, X-rays, extractions, dentures, partials, implants, and full-arch restorations, cost thousands of dollars at a traditional practice. Our sliding scale model and SIDE revenue reduce what patients pay. Donations fill the rest of the gap.
That gap is where the work happens.
When a patient comes to us who has been living with a toothache and no way to address it, donations fund the appointment that starts their care. When a patient needs a denture or partial to restore their ability to eat and speak without pain, donations contribute to that prosthesis. When a patient's situation calls for implant-supported care, the most complex and transformative work we do, donations make it possible to say yes.
Donations also fund the infrastructure that makes all of it work: the clinical team, the on-site denture lab, the equipment, the supplies. A state-of-the-art nonprofit dental clinic does not sustain itself on goodwill. It sustains itself on a funding model where every source, SIDE tuition, patient contributions, and donor gifts, plays a role in keeping the doors open and the operatories running.
What you give does not disappear into administration. It becomes a procedure, an appointment, a care plan for someone who had no other option.
The Ripple Effect of Dental Care
The numbers tell part of the story. In 2025 alone, Local Start Dental delivered $4.8 million in donated dentistry, performed 22,309 procedures, placed 524 dental implants, and fitted 558 complete and partial dentures. Since opening in 2021, we have crossed $19.4 million in cumulative donated dentistry and served patients from 78 of North Carolina's 100 counties.
But the numbers do not capture what the procedures actually unlock.
Patients who receive dental care report returning to job interviews they had been avoiding. They describe eating foods they had given up. They talk about laughing without covering their mouths, meeting new people without calculating whether the other person will notice their teeth, sleeping through the night for the first time in years. The dental procedure is the mechanism. What it restores is something deeper: the ordinary confidence that most people take for granted and that missing or painful teeth quietly erode over time.
North Carolina has some of the highest rates of untreated dental disease in the country. Dental care is not covered by most insurance plans, not affordable on most fixed or low incomes, and not accessible outside of urban centers for a significant portion of the state's population. Local Start Dental was built to address that gap directly. Every donation makes it possible to serve one more patient from one more county who had no other option.
Your Gift, Directly Into Care
Local Start Dental is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
If you give monthly, your support creates the kind of sustained funding that lets us plan, grow, and serve patients consistently rather than responding only when one-time gifts come in. Monthly donors are the foundation of what makes the rest of the mission possible.
If you give once, at any level, you are contributing directly to a procedure, an appointment, a moment where someone who had given up on dental care discovers that care is available to them.
There are also other ways to support the work: volunteering your time as a dental professional, referring patients who qualify for our services, donating dental products or supplies, or exploring SIDE training opportunities.
